44.1 or 48 kHz? Choose the Sample Rate for the Delivery
44.1 kHz and 48 kHz both cover ordinary music work. Choose based on the destination, keep the project consistent, and use 24-bit for recording headroom.
Sample-rate arguments often promise a dramatic improvement that the project cannot actually use.
For most home recording, the practical choice is less exciting: pick a rate that matches the delivery, use a sensible bit depth while recording, and avoid creating conversion work without a reason.
Sample rate is tied to the project
Sample rate is how many samples per second represent the analog signal. A higher rate can represent a wider frequency range, but a higher setting also affects file size, processing load, and the timing represented by a buffer.
Music distribution commonly uses 44.1 kHz. Video workflows commonly use 48 kHz. Focusrite’s current explanation describes those as the normal destinations and notes that 44.1 and 48 kHz are sufficient for the ordinary range of human hearing.
If the project is being made for video, start at 48 kHz. If it is a music project with no video requirement, 44.1 kHz is a sensible default. If a client, editor, or mastering service has already specified a rate, use that instead of creating a preventable conversion step.
Bit depth is about level resolution
Bit depth describes how finely each sample’s amplitude is represented. More bit depth gives a wider usable range between the noise floor and the maximum level, which is useful while recording because it leaves room for performance changes.
For new recording projects, 24-bit is the practical choice on equipment that supports it. It does not mean the source should be recorded near clipping. Leave headroom and set the input gain correctly; bit depth is not an excuse for a poor gain setting.

Higher is not a free upgrade
Higher sample rates create larger files and can increase CPU load. They may be appropriate for a specific production requirement, sound-design process, or conversion plan. They are not automatically audible proof that a normal vocal, guitar, or podcast recording is better.
Changing sample rate halfway through a project also creates practical problems. The DAW may resample existing files, hardware clocking may change, and a video editor may receive files that do not match the timeline. The setting deserves a reason before you change it.
The decision in plain language
Use 44.1 kHz for a standard music project, 48 kHz for a video-centered project, and 24-bit for recording when available. Confirm the delivery requirements first. If no requirement exists, choose one rate and stop thinking about it long enough to make the recording.
The point is not to use the biggest number. It is to keep the project technically consistent while spending your attention on the part listeners can actually hear.
